Color - Coded Taxiway Lighting System Evaluation

An in-service evaluation of color-coded taxiway centerline and edge lights to identify "No-stop" portions of taxiways was conducted at Greater Pittsburgh International Airport. Commercial Air Carrier pilots were requested to provide
opinions and comments as to the effectiveness of the systems under various operating and weather conditions. Results of the evaluation indicated that the color-coding concept provided enhanced identification of the critical No-stop taxiway areas. However, additional signs and/or taxiway surface markings will
be required to identify such areas under good visibility daytime conditions and to provide supplemental guidance for the more demanding nighttime and low visibility daytime situation.
