Additional information on how the test was performed
|
The HWD testing encompassed various locations and purposes:
- Slab Center: HWD tests were carried out at the center of each slab to evaluate the properties of pavement layers throughout the traffic testing.
- Slab Edge: HWD tests were performed at the edges of slabs under the wheel paths to evaluate the load transfer efficiency. These tests were only performed on the inner lane slabs.
- Slab Corner: HWD tests performed at the corners of each slab to evaluate the conditions of slab support.
The HWD test utilized the FAA KUAB with one sensor under the load plate, one sensor at 12 inches in front of the load plate and six sensors located behind the load plate at 12-inch intervals. At each test location, four drops were applied with a target loading sequence of: 12,000 lbs., 24,000 lbs., and 36,000 lbs. with an approximate 36,000-lb seating load.
The FAA performed HWD tests for different purposes:
Uniformity HWD Tests
These tests were conducted on 11/30/2017 at the center of the PCC slabs. The uniformity tests were not intended for acceptance of the test pavements.
Baseline HWD Tests
These tests were carried out to establish reference baselines for monitoring subsequent changes in pavement and support conditions during traffic testing. The baseline tests were conducted on the following dates:
- On 08/20/2018 on the outer lane slabs prior to trafficking. Test locations are shown in Figure 1.
- On 8/24/2018 after completion of static load test. Test locations are shown in Figure 1.
- On 10/15/2019 on the inner lane slabs prior to trafficking. Test locations are shown in Figure 1.
- On 4/3/2023 on the inner lane slabs before resuming the traffic test. Test locations are shown in Figure 2.
Traffic HWD Tests
These tests were performed on a weekly basis during traffic testing. They included:
- From 8/31/2018 to 5/17/2019 on the north outer lane. Test locations are shown in Figure 1.
- From 8/31/2018 to 10/15/2019 on the south outer lane. Test locations are shown in Figure 1.
- From 10/25/2019 to 3/9/2019 on the inner lanes. Test locations are shown in Figure 1.
- From 4/14/2023 to 6/5/2023 on the inner lanes. Test locations are shown in Figure 2.
Note: The HWD testing was carried out from East to West in distinct data collection lines. For Slab Edge and Slab Corner testing, the load plate was placed to the West of the joints, while the sensors were positioned to the East of the joint.
