Facility Layout

Construction of the FWD-HWD Round-Up began in December 2009.  A concrete and flexible pavement section was created for the project.  Both sections are 60' long and 15' wide.  The concrete section consists of 4 15' by 15' slabs constructed end to end.  The concrete and flexible pavement sections are also constructed end to end.  The pavement was constructed in the east end of the facility over a high strength subgrade (CBR 25-30).

Pavement Structure

The pavement structure was constructed over a high strength subgrade.  The high strength subgrade was excavated to allow for the placement of a medium strength subgrade (CBR 5-7).  This medium strength subgrade was placed in 7 lifts starting at a depth of 78" below the surface of the final pavement structure.  For the concrete section, a 6" lift of P-306 econocrete and a 16" lift of P-501 PCC pavement was placed on top of the medium strength subgrade.  A paper bond break was used in between the P-306 and P-501 concrete lifts.  For the flexible section, a 15" lift of P-154 subbase, a 5" lift of P-403 HMA base course, and a 5" lift of P-401 HMA surface course was placed on top of the medium strength subgrade.  The shoulder repair around the test pavement was backfilled with the excavated high strength subgrade and then capped with a 5" lift of DGA and a 5" lift of P-401 HMA surface course.
