Material Characterization Plan & Data

Construction Cycle 5 (CC5) Material Characterization Plan & Data

According to the criteria for acceptance testing of CC5 test items, each layer of the subgrade will be accepted when the measured CBR meets the requirements defined below.

Acceptance measurements will be made on each lot of completed subgrade.  The lot size shall be determined by the Engineer and shall consist approximately of 18,000 s.f. of completed subgrade.  The total lot area will be divided into four (4) equal areas, or sublots.  A random location will be located in each sublot in accordance with procedures described in ASTM D 3665.

Three (3) CBR penetrations will be made within one foot of each other at each random location.  The average of the three penetrations will be considered as an individual CBR test for that sublot.  The lot shall be considered acceptable when:

         a.   The average of the four (4) CBR tests for the low strength material is between 3.2 to 4.8 and the average of the four (4) CBR tests for the medium strength material is between 6.4 to 9.6.

         b.   The range between the high and low CBR tests within a particular low strength lot is less than or equal to 2.5 and the range between the high and low CBR tests within a medium strength lot is less than or equal to 5.0 for the lot.

Subgrade material not meeting the CBR acceptance criteria shall be pulverized, reworked by wetting or drying, and re-compacted until the CBR acceptance criteria is satisfied.

Additional testing and data relative to subgrade and HMA surface layer testing can be found here.
