Dr. David Brill and Dr. Navneet Garg of the Airport Technology R&D Branch facilitated the Airport Pavement Workshop: Introduction to the ICAO ACR-PCR System Using FAARFIELD 2.0 in Trondheim, Norway on June 27, 2022, as part of the 2022 International Conference on the Bearing Capacity of Roads, Railways and Airfields (BCRRA).

The workshop covered the concepts of the new Aircraft Classification Rating-Pavement Classification Rating (ACR-PCR) standard. The ACR-PCR system was adopted as the world standard for airport pavement strength reporting by the ICAO Council in 2020, replacing the legacy Aircraft Classification Number-Pavement Classification Number (ACN-PCN) system. The workshop content explored key functionalities that make the new ACR-PCR system simpler to use, and covered examples of PCR computations using the FAA’s FAARFIELD 2.0 software. More than 20 individuals from 12 countries, including consulting engineers, representatives of government and military organizations, and academia attended.

In addition to facilitating the workshop at the BCRRA conference, Drs. Brill and Garg presented technical papers. Dr. Brill presented the paper Machine Learning Solutions for Development of Performance Deterioration Models of Flexible Airfield Pavements and Dr. Garg presented Estimating Asphalt Concrete Strains in Airport Pavements Using Geometric Property of the Pavement Surface Deflection Basin from Heavy Weight Deflectometer Tests. Dr. Garg also chaired a session titled Case Studies.

During the BCRRA conference, Drs. Brill and Garg met with French DGAC/STAC staff to discuss recently completed ovalization tests at the FAA’s National Airport Pavement & Materials Research Center using a prototype device developed by STAC and loaned to the FAA.
