Evaluation of 36-Inch Internally Lighted Windcone

The purpose of this project was to evaluate a 36-inch internally lighted wind cone. The current Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Advisory Circular provides for external illumination of wind cones using floodlights mounted above the unit. The internally lighted wind cone was installed on the airfield at the FAA Technical Center Airport at Atlantic City (ACY) to permit evaluation by FAA and locally based private pilots. Results of the testing, accomplished during taxi and flight operations under varying wind conditions, revealed that the internally lighted 36-inch wind cone provided adequate information as to wind direction and velocity under all wind conditions.
