National Tree Growth Rate Database

DOT/FAA/TC-21/57 Authors: Chad Nixon and William Ziegler

This research project was conducted to improve predictive analysis and decision making for tree management in the vicinity of airports across the United States (U.S.). During this research, a database was developed that contains the location of dominant tree species across the U.S., and the rate at which these species grow per year. Results obtained through this database will be utilized by the Federal Aviation Administration to monitor trees in a specified region, make predictions for long-term growth rates, and manage data as needed to help airports maintain clear and safe approach and departure paths to runway ends. This database supersedes a prior rule-of-thumb that assumed all trees grow at a fixed rate of 2 feet annually.
