Review of Equipment and Installation Options for MALS, MALSF and MALSR Threshold Lights

Runway threshold lights to be used with Medium Intensity Approach Lights together with Runway Alignment Indicator Lights will be evaluated at NAFEC to provide improved visual guidance and threshold conspicuity in Category I visibility operating conditions. To aid in the selection of particular lighting components for future evaluation testing, this report summarizes the intensity requirements, lists available lamps and fixtures, and discusses installation options and estimated costs. In a typical system, green threshold lights will be spaced 10 feet apart with the outer lights in line with the runway edge lights conforming with ALSF-1 and ICAO criteria.
