Taxiway "No-Stop" Segment Visual Identification

This report describes the evaluation of color-coded taxiway edge lights intended to provide nighttime identification of taxiway segments within which aircraft may be taxied but not stopped. Within such areas, a stationary aircraft might constitute a physical hazard to aircraft landing and/or departing from an adjacent runway, or might distort the guidance signals of an ILS system.

Various configurations of alternating blue and yellow colored taxiway edge lights were displayed for pilot evaluation. The subject pilots were required to judge the effectiveness of the system for identifying the critical "no-stop" taxiway segment. Pilot questionnaire responses and recorded commenC5 are provided, along witn conclusions drawn from the test results.

The evaluation effort was conducted at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Technical Center, Atlantic City Airport, New Jersey.
