Jie Chen / Monday, June 29, 2026 / Categories: News Site Visit by FHWA Airport Pavement R&D Section personnel hosted four members of the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) contractor staff responsible for operation of their Accelerated Pavement Testing Facility (PTF) located at the Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center - Office of Infrastructure Research and Development on June 17, 2026. The PTF is similar in concept to the FAA's National Airport Pavement Test Facility, only smaller. Their facility simulates truck traffic with controlled loading and pavement temperatures. In only a few months, the facility’s loading machines can apply wheel loads replicating many years of service and collect the corresponding pavement distress and performance data. Over the course of four hours, FAA staff provided in-depth tours of the FAA's pavement testing facilities and laboratory. Discussion centered on operations, maintenance, development of research topics, and data management. FHWA and FAA explored opportunities for information exchange and joint research.
